Airdrie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Airdrie politics

📅 This Week In Airdrie: 📅

  • On Tuesday, at 1:00 pm, there will be a City Council meeting. The meeting will begin with a Public Hearing to gather feedback on a Rail Policy. The Rail Policy establishes clear guidelines for development within 1,600 metres of the Canadian Pacific Kansas City rail corridor, using setbacks for residential and vulnerable uses and a risk-based approach for non-residential uses. It is designed to reduce land use incompatibilities, standardize decision-making, and provide regulatory certainty for property owners, while supporting downtown revitalization and safe rail operations. The policy incorporates federal and industry standards, including guidelines from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Railway Association of Canada, and was developed through extensive stakeholder engagement.

  • Mayor Heather Spearman will approve the illumination of City Hall in green on March 2nd, 2026 to recognize Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month. This nationwide initiative promotes awareness and understanding of agriculture, food systems, and the important contributions of Canadian farmers and food workers.

  • Also on the meeting agenda is a report regarding Council’s 2025 Focus Areas. The report highlights progress across transportation, recreation, environment, community, economic development, engagement, and advocacy. Transportation improvements included the completion of the 40th Avenue interchange, ongoing Yankee Valley Boulevard upgrades, and a completed Transportation Master Plan, with the rail underpass now scheduled for 2029. Recreation infrastructure saw the Inspire Multi-Use Facility open under budget, progress on the NE Regional Park, and continued planning for additional facilities. Environmental initiatives reduced corporate emissions by 7% in 2024 and lowered water use, while programs like the Clean Energy Improvement Program and Green Fleet Strategy advanced renewable energy and efficiency goals. In community services, the City completed a Social Needs Assessment, advanced Indigenous relations, and continued affordable housing initiatives, receiving $12.4 million of federal Housing Accelerator Funds. Economic prosperity efforts included 110 new business licenses, downtown revitalization, tourism strategies, and regional investment partnerships. Public engagement grew through the Involve Airdrie platform, and advocacy efforts focused on securing a $50 million provincial contribution for wastewater infrastructure while strengthening intergovernmental relationships.

  • Council will also discuss the Airdrie Sport Tourism Strategy. It sets a guiding vision to grow the city’s visitor economy through sports-related events while maintaining community access to recreation. Sport tourism in Airdrie has already proven economically valuable, according to the City, with events from 2022 to 2025 generating nearly $794,000 in facility rental revenue and demonstrating high ROI, particularly for smaller, repeatable tournaments. The Strategy identifies 12 priority sports - including Baseball, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, and Track and Field - based on local participation, facility readiness, and hosting potential. It emphasizes balancing event hosting with resident access by using off-peak scheduling, clustering events, and prioritizing measurable economic and community returns. In 2026, 26 provincial and regional tournaments are projected to generate $3.49 million in visitor spending.

  • Rocky View County and the City of Airdrie are initiating negotiations for a capital cost-sharing agreement to fund a new multi-use recreation centre in Airdrie’s southwest quadrant. Currently, Genesis Place serves as the city's only such facility, offering fitness, swimming, and arena amenities. In a February 2026 meeting, Rocky View County Council directed Administration to develop a negotiating mandate before beginning substantive discussions. Planning for the facility has incorporated public feedback from open houses and online consultations conducted over the past year. At this time, specific financial terms remain confidential due to closed session deliberations.
