Airdrie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Airdrie politics

📅 This Week In Airdrie: 📅

  • The Community Safety and Social Services Standing Committee will meet on Tuesday at 9:30 am. The Committee will review the 2025 Final Findings Report from the Systems Navigator, Housing and Well-Being Supports Program at North Rocky View Community Links. The report notes that the program supported 107 residents through 67 Housing Needs Assessments, with 68% adults and 32% children and youth, and found that residents faced challenges including lack of income, affordable housing, disabilities, mental health or addiction issues, and family breakdown. Among participants, 28 were under-housed, 47 unhoused, and 34 at risk of losing housing. In 2026, the program will expand from one to two Systems Navigators, and findings will feed into the upcoming 2026 Community Safety and Well-Being Plan.

  • The Committee will also review the 2025 Social Needs Assessment: What We Heard report, which captured input from 863 residents through surveys, open houses, coffee chats, and targeted engagement. Residents praised Airdrie’s community strengths, including its “small-town feel with big-city amenities,” local businesses, and access to recreation, but identified challenges such as affordability, mental health services, youth supports, and barriers to accessing social services. The findings will inform collaboration with local service providers, guide potential pilot projects, and shape the City’s 2026 Community Safety and Well-Being Plan.

  • City Council unanimously approved a new Land Acknowledgement Policy. The policy is part of broader reconciliation efforts and aligns with the City’s Indigenous Framework and Action Plan introduced in 2025. It establishes guidelines for land acknowledgements at City events, meetings, and in official communications, guided by four Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action. City Administration worked with Indigenous consultants and received input from Elders from Tsuut’ina and Kainai Nations, as well as local reconciliation groups. Discussions emphasized that reconciliation is an ongoing process and that land acknowledgements should be meaningful rather than performative.

  • Council also unanimously approved a shift to multi-year budgeting, adopting a four-year financial plan aligned with the Council term. The new approach formally sets operating and capital budgets for each year in the cycle, rather than approving only one year with future figures provided for reference. City Administration says this model improves long-term planning, strengthens alignment with strategic priorities, and provides greater tax and fee predictability for residents. The budget will still be reviewed annually, allowing Council to adjust for economic changes, growth, inflation, or legislative impacts. Administration also highlighted that multi-year budgeting offers greater stability during election years, giving new Councils time to set priorities before approving budgets. While concerns about forecasting uncertainty and flexibility were noted, the City says annual reviews and phased implementation from 2027 to 2031 will help manage those risks.

  • The recall petition targeting Airdrie-East MLA Angela Pitt failed after organizers fell well short of the required number of signatures. The campaign gathered about 2,200 names, far below the nearly 15,000 needed to trigger a recall vote. The organizer said the effort was intended to raise awareness about concerns in the riding rather than force a vote, and claimed it prompted greater visibility from Pitt. He cited challenges such as harsh winter weather and low political engagement among residents as reasons for the low signature count.Angela Pitt dismissed the petition as baseless and politically motivated, saying she remains focused on representing her constituents. Elections Alberta is expected to confirm the formal conclusion of the petition process.
