Airdrie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Airdrie politics

📅 This Week In Airdrie: 📅

  • The Standing Committee on Community and Corporate Services meeting and the Standing Committee on Community Infrastructure and Strategic Growth meeting, originally scheduled for Tuesday at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm respectively, have been cancelled.

  • Airdrie is leading population growth in the Calgary region, adding more than 15,000 residents since 2021 to reach over 92,000 people by July 2025. Calgary itself also saw significant growth, increasing by more than 250,000 residents, while other nearby communities like Chestermere, Cochrane, Okotoks, and Strathmore recorded smaller but notable gains. The data highlights strong growth across southern Alberta, driven in part by young families, with more than 18% of Airdrie’s population between the ages of 25 and 34. Province-wide, Alberta’s population grew by nearly 600,000 people between 2021 and 2025.

  • Council received an overview of Community Links’ services and their impact on local residents. The non-profit organization outlined its role in connecting people to resources, supporting family well-being, and assisting vulnerable residents through a mix of City-funded and community-based programs. Presenters highlighted five municipally funded services, including information and referral, counselling, family resource supports, fair access assistance, and systems navigation. In 2025, the organization helped more than 1,200 families access additional supports, provided counselling to over 300 individuals, and assisted more than 100 households facing housing challenges. Council also heard how programming has expanded to support older children, youth, and families navigating disabilities or neurodiversity. Several Council members expressed appreciation for the organization’s long-standing role in helping residents build connections and stability within the community.

  • With water restrictions lifted, the City of Airdrie has resumed maintaining outdoor skating rinks across the community. City crews are working on snowbank and boarded rinks, as well as pathways and sidewalks, as long as temperatures remain below zero. Airdrie currently has multiple maintained rinks in neighbourhood parks, along with three natural ice surfaces at Nose Creek Pond, Waterstone, and Summerhill. As of mid-January, ice thickness at these natural sites meets or is close to the required standard for preparation. The City also continues upkeep of the skating loop at Northeast Regional Park.

  • The Mayor’s Night of the Arts is returning to Airdrie on February 7th for its ninth annual celebration at the Bert Church Theatre. The event will feature live performances from local artists alongside awards recognizing contributions to the city’s arts and culture scene. Awards will highlight a range of achievements, from emerging and youth artists to educators, patrons, and professional creators. The evening is designed to showcase the growing creative community and highlight the role arts play in shaping Airdrie’s identity beyond its role as a commuter city. Organizers are encouraging residents of all interests to attend for an evening of performances, recognition, and community connection. Doors open at 5:45 pm, with the show starting at 7:00 pm, and tickets are available through the City of Airdrie.
