Airdrie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Airdrie politics

📅 This Week In Airdrie: 📅

  • Airdrie’s new Council has officially begun its four-year term following a swearing-in ceremony held at City Hall. The event marked the start of the 2025-2029 Council, led by Mayor Heather Spearman. Joining her on Council are Ron Chapman, Chad Stewart, Simisola Obasan, Chris Glass, Kristen Shima, and Candice Kolson, who together will guide Airdrie’s next chapter of municipal leadership.

  • There will be a City Council meeting today at 1:00 pm. Council will be asked to make Council Member and Citizen Member appointments to boards and committees. On Tuesday, also at 1:00 pm, there will be another meeting of City Council. Mayor Spearman will declare November 2025 as Family Violence Prevention Month. Meanwhile, former Mayor Brown had previously approved several City Hall illuminations: on November 4th, City Hall will shine green in support of National Runaway Prevention Month’s Go Green Day, and on November 8th, it will again be illuminated in green to mark World Town Planning Day.

  • Administration will present its 2026 Operating and Capital Budgets to Council for review, with formal deliberations scheduled for November 24th, 26th, and 28th, 2025. The budget package, which will be published publicly on November 5th, includes the main City budgets as well as subsidiary budgets for Airdrie Housing Limited and the Airdrie Public Library, highlighting the financial impact of these organizations on the City. Council will also discuss a request from Airdrie Pride that the City raise the Transgender flag during Transgender Awareness Week, taking place November 13th to 19th, 2025, and recognize Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th. Airdrie Pride has offered to supply the flag if needed.

  • A new report from Alberta’s Electoral Boundaries Commission proposes significant changes to how Airdrie and Rocky View County residents are represented provincially. The existing Airdrie-Cochrane riding would be split into two new districts, Airdrie-East and Airdrie-West, to reflect rapid population growth. Airdrie-East would include parts of Rocky View County, Crossfield, and Irricana, with about 54,000 residents, while Airdrie-West would cover the city’s western neighbourhoods and nearby rural areas, representing roughly 48,000 people. The report also suggests moving Conrich into Calgary-Cross and adjusting other nearby ridings, including a revised Cochrane-Springbank and Mountain View-Kneehill. The Commission says the updates aim to ensure fair and effective representation as Airdrie expands. Public submissions are open until December 19th, 2025, with hearings scheduled for January 2026. The final report is due March 2026, ahead of new boundaries being implemented for the 2027 provincial election.

  • The Airdrie Food Bank is preparing for another busy winter as demand for assistance continues to climb. Executive Director Meghan West said need has grown steadily during her nine years with the organization, with winter always bringing extra pressure. Last December, the food bank distributed more than 500 hampers, an all-time record. West said families are now struggling not just from isolated setbacks but from persistent affordability challenges. Volunteers remain essential, assembling custom hampers and running programs like Fuel 4 Kids, which provided over 13,000 lunches and 15,000 snacks in 2024.
