There will be a City Council meeting on Tuesday at 1:00 pm. The Overstrength Sewer Effluent Limits and Rates Bylaw is back in front of Councillors. Public input sessions and special Council meetings were held to address questions and concerns from both Councillors and the public. The bylaw sets surcharges for industrial and commercial wastewater that exceeds chemical or solid limits with the aim of protecting infrastructure and the environment. A review of the Industrial Monitoring Program found that education alone wasn’t enough to change business practices, so a tiered rate system is now proposed instead of discretionary discounts. The new rates align with Calgary’s bylaw, with higher fees for greater levels of overstrength effluent. The City will update its website with the new rates and tier structure.

Council is being asked to dissolve the Joint Planning Area One (JPA1) Trilateral Committee and to shift focus from the JPA1 project to developing an Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) and Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework (ICF). The Committee, which included representatives from Airdrie, Calgary, and Rocky View County, was originally tasked with a Context Study on shared servicing and growth issues. Following the dissolution of the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board and withdrawal of provincial funding, the JPA1 project is no longer required. Council is being asked to acknowledge the committee’s dissolution and use the JPA1 Context Study to guide the development of the IDP and ICF.
- Mayor Peter Brown has submitted a Notice of Motion proposing amendments to the City of Airdrie’s Subdivision Servicing Agreement Security Policy. The current policy requires developers to post performance securities to ensure completion of contractual obligations and provide financial protection to the City in case of default. Additional securities are currently based on the developer’s prior experience with the City, with higher security required for less experienced developers. The Motion asks Administration to review and suggest changes to this tiered system, including basing security requirements on regional development experience rather than just experience within Airdrie. Recommendations and potential policy changes are to be presented to Council for consideration before December 31st, 2025.
- The City is planning to convert the former public library into civic administration offices. The move to Inspire frees up the library space, allowing it to be repurposed and integrated into the City’s real estate portfolio. The plan supports the creation of a downtown corporate campus anchored by City Hall, consolidating staff from satellite offices and optimizing space efficiency. Renovations will include new offices, meeting rooms, updated furniture, and repurposed file rooms, with work projected to support Administration growth for 8 to 12 years. Funding for renovations will be considered in the 2026 - 2035 Capital Budget. Council will review funding sources, potential revenue opportunities, and broader impacts during budget deliberations. The plan also positions the City to vacate the 2 Highland Park office, which could then be leased.

Mo Fahad Shaukat has withdrawn from the 2025 municipal election, citing an inability to balance Council duties with his current job. Shaukat thanked supporters, returned campaign donations, and expressed gratitude for the connections he made during his campaign. He plans to continue work on first responder and military mental health initiatives, as well as youth partnerships. Shaukat emphasized the importance of managing rapid city growth without outpacing essential services. He encouraged other candidates to run with integrity and stated his intention to run again in four years. His withdrawal comes alongside four others who have also stepped aside from the race.
