Airdrie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Airdrie politics

📅 This Week In Airdrie: 📅

  • The Community Safety and Social Services Standing Committee will meet on Tuesday at 9:00 am. Residents of Windsong and surrounding neighbourhoods will present a proposal regarding parking to the Committee. The residents raised concerns about residential parking and the enforcement of the 72-hour parking rule. Despite reaching out to multiple City departments and the RCMP, they found inconsistent information and a lack of clear enforcement, noting that in 2024 there were 3,233 complaints - an average of nine per day. They propose stricter enforcement with tickets and towing if the 72-hour limit is exceeded, ensuring homeowners and guests have safe and accessible parking. Additionally, they suggest creating a bylaw requiring homeowners or landlords with secondary suites to provide designated parking for tenants.

  • The Committee will receive a six-month update on the Systems Navigator role within the Housing and Well-Being Supports Program at North Rocky View Community Links. From January to June 2025, the Systems Navigator assisted 69 Airdrie residents experiencing housing insecurity, including 41 adults and 28 children, addressing issues such as under-housing, homelessness, and risk of losing housing. Key factors contributing to housing challenges included insufficient income, lack of affordable housing, disabilities, mental health and addiction issues, and family breakdowns. Most residents who received support had lived in Airdrie for over a year, and a majority of the clients were female. The Systems Navigator position is funded by the City of Airdrie and the federal Reaching Home Program through March 2026. Next steps include continuing support for residents, preparing a final report in January 2026, and using findings to inform the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan and Social Needs Assessment.

  • The Community Infrastructure and Strategic Growth Standing Committee will meet on Tuesday at 1:00 pm. The Committee will review the 2024-2025 Parking Study report, which examines downtown parking in Airdrie to support housing, business, and revitalization goals. The study found that while some downtown blocks experience peak usage, overall parking is underutilized, and current requirements often exceed actual demand, particularly for seniors, young adults, and low-income residents. Recommendations include reducing parking requirements for affordable housing, improving time-of-day management, encouraging shared parking among businesses, and enhancing support for bikes, scooters, and electric vehicles. Medium-term steps involve planning a new downtown parking facility and updating bylaws, while long-term goals focus on constructing a parkade and implementing technology like occupancy sensors and mobile apps. The engagement findings will be shared on Involve Airdrie and the City’s website.

  • Mayor Peter Brown announced that he will not be seeking re-election, ending his tenure that began in 2010. In a social media post, he explained that while he was passionate about the role, he felt it was the right time to step aside. With that news, Councillor Tina Petrow has officially announced her candidacy for Mayor. She plans to launch her full campaign on September 13th and has filed her papers to run. Petrow emphasized her commitment to maintaining open communication with the community and keeping residents informed about City Hall decisions. Councillor Heather Spearman also announced her candidacy for Mayor. She emphasized that the role of Mayor is about uniting the community and making transparent decisions that ensure taxpayers receive real value. Since joining Council in 2021, Spearman says she has focused on healthcare advocacy, affordable housing, accessibility, and improving core City services. Petrow and Spearman join Dave Douglass, who we told you about last week.

  • Ron Chapman has announced he is seeking re-election as a Councillor. A long-time resident of 47 years and a 15-year Council member, Chapman emphasizes a steady, common-sense approach to managing the city’s growth. He highlighted achievements from the past four years, including planning for the South West Recreation Centre, completing the 40th Avenue Overpass, opening Phase 1 of the North East Regional Park, launching Inspire community hub, building a fourth fire hall, completing wastewater pipeline design, maintaining low municipal taxes, and keeping Airdrie among Alberta’s safest cities. For the next term, his priorities include ensuring open and transparent government, maintaining strong community safety services, fostering an inclusive and welcoming city, managing growth responsibly, and expanding affordable housing options in partnership with local organizations.

  • The City, in partnership with the Airdrie RCMP and Accident Support Services International Ltd. (ASSI), has opened a new Collision Reporting Centre (CRC) at the Municipal Police Building. The CRC allows drivers involved in minor collisions - those without criminal activity, hazardous materials, or serious injuries - to self-report, streamlining the process. Trained ASSI staff assist residents with paperwork, photographing vehicle damage, verifying claims, and communicating with insurance providers. The centre uses ASSI’s Collision Reporting and Occurrence Management System to digitally capture and analyze collision data, supporting improved road safety. Mayor Peter Brown said that the CRC will make reporting minor collisions easier and enhance service for residents. The program, fully funded by participating insurers, allows police to focus on urgent public safety calls. The centre is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with extended hours until 6:30 pm on Wednesdays.
