📅 This Week In Airdrie: 📅

  • The Alberta government has committed $50 million to upgrade Airdrie’s wastewater system in response to the city’s rapid population growth. The funding will support the construction of a seven-kilometre pipeline connecting Airdrie to Calgary’s wastewater treatment system, eliminating the need for a new local facility. The overall project is expected to cost $114 million, with design work beginning in 2025 and construction set for 2026, aiming for completion in 2027. Provincial officials say the project will support the development of 45,000 housing units and new commercial spaces. The partnership with Calgary is projected to reduce long-term infrastructure costs while ensuring reliable service for residents and businesses. Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown praised the investment as the largest in the city’s history and a timely response to mounting infrastructure pressure. Local MLA Angela Pitt also highlighted the importance of the upgrade for supporting families and economic growth in the region.

  • Jay Raymundo, a longtime Airdrie resident, business owner, and father, is running for Council with a focus on guiding the city through its rapid growth. His campaign centres around three key goals: building a dynamic city, fostering a healthy community, and creating an inclusive future. Drawing from his background as a personal trainer, Raymundo places strong emphasis on expanding health, fitness, and recreation opportunities for all residents. He aims to make Airdrie a place where everyone feels a sense of belonging and where diversity is embraced. A resident since 2007, Raymundo has been actively involved in the community through his business, NRG Fitness, and by serving on local boards such as the Airdrie Chamber of Commerce and Rocky View Immigration. He previously ran for Council and says his long-term commitment shows he's serious about making a difference.

  • Airdrie hosted the 12th annual Korean War Veterans Day Ceremony on Saturday to mark the 72nd anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. The event drew around 170 attendees. The ceremony honoured those who served in what is often called the “Forgotten War,” highlighting its significance in Canadian military history. Airdrie is home to the Korean War Gapyeong Battle Victory Monument, commemorating the bravery of the 2nd Battalion of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, who defended Seoul in 1951. The monument symbolizes the strong diplomatic relationship between Canada and South Korea and is made of stone transported from South Korean battle sites. It stands nearly three metres tall and is one of only five such monuments in Canada. Organizers emphasized the importance of educating the public and preserving the memory of Korean War veterans.

  • Airdrie’s popular street festival, airdrieFEST, is returning on September 6th, 2025. Originally launched in 2010 as a small community event, it has grown into one of the city's signature festivals, drawing more than 7,000 attendees each year. This year’s event will expand further into the Towerlane Mall parking lot, offering additional games, food, and entertainment options. The festival features local artisans, non-profits, sports groups, and vendors, with live music and family-friendly activities for all ages. Held on Main Street in Downtown Airdrie, the event will have limited parking, and attendees are encouraged to walk, use transit, e-scooters, or rideshare.
