Airdrie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Airdrie politics

📅 This Week In Airdrie: 📅

  • There are no Council or Committee meetings this week at City Hall. The next meeting of City Council will take place on May 6th.

  • In Airdrie-Cochrane, 25,833 people cast their votes during the advanced polls for the 2025 general election. Overall, 7.3 million Canadians participated in the advance polls, a 25% increase from the previous election in 2021. Airdrie-Cochrane ranked 77th out of 343 ridings across Canada for the number of advanced votes cast. In total, 815,131 Albertans have already voted.

  • Airdrie recently held its inaugural Policing Committee meeting. Mohammad Shaukat was appointed as the Chair of the Committee for a three-year term starting on January 1st, 2026. The Committee consists of five voting members, including two Councillors and three citizen members, with Mayor Peter Brown serving as a non-voting ex-officio member. At the meeting, Committee members received updates from Municipal Enforcement and RCMP Support Services, as well as an overview of the Municipal Policing Service Agreement (MPSA). The Committee's mandate includes overseeing the MPSA, representing public interests to the RCMP, and developing a community safety plan. City Council has allocated $27,000 for the Committee's startup costs.

  • The Airdrie Public Library (APL) has successfully raised $1.5 million towards expanding its collection. The funds will be used to expand resources such as books, digital materials, and multilingual content to cater to diverse needs. This accomplishment completes Chapter 1 of APL’s fundraising plan, with future sponsorship opportunities available for further expansion as the library prepares to open a new state-of-the-art facility.

  • Airdrie is gathering public input for its 2026 municipal budget, which could fund major infrastructure projects, including a wastewater pipeline to Calgary, a new regional lift station, and a two-lane road extension. These projects, pending Council approval, are part of the City’s capital plan, which also includes ongoing initiatives like arena upgrades and the construction of a new fire station. Residents and business owners have until May 11th to provide feedback. The final budget will be adopted by the end of 2025.
