• The Subdivision and Development Appeal Board will meet on Thursday at 9:00 am to hear an appeal of the City's refusal of a development permit for a two-bedroom secondary suite on Baywater Landing SW. The Development Authority turned the application down because the proposed parking pad falls 0.36 metres short of the 3.0-metre width required for a stall beside the existing garage, would create more than three contiguous stalls with direct lane access, and did not meet the City's lot grading and drainage requirements. The applicant is asking the Board to approve the suite with the parking variances, arguing that a secondary suite is a permitted use and that the shortfall is minor. The appeal points to a nearby property on Baywater Landing SW that was approved with a legal suite, a carriage suite, a triple garage, and a fourth parking stall as evidence that the proposed development fits the surrounding area. The Board can confirm, vary, or overturn the refusal.
  
  
• The Community Infrastructure and Strategic Growth Standing Committee has cancelled the meeting it had scheduled for Tuesday at 1:00 pm. The City posted the cancellation notice on August 27th. The Committee's next regular meeting is scheduled for September 22nd at 1:00 pm.
  
  
• New data from Alberta Health Services shows the Airdrie Community Health Centre recorded 47 emergency visits for e-scooter injuries between April 1st and June 30th, including 13 involving children under 18. The centre logged 99 e-scooter injury visits in the 2025-26 fiscal year, up from 54 the year before and 60 in 2023-24, though AHS cautioned that new medical coding introduced in 2025-26 means the latest count may reflect both more injuries and better tracking. Across Alberta, hospitalizations from falls off electric scooters reached 163 in 2025-26, the highest total in four years and about 13% higher than the year before. The City of Airdrie allows personally owned e-scooters on pathways only, while shared rental scooters may be ridden on pathways, sidewalks, and roadways under a provincial pilot and are limited to users 16 and older. Municipal Enforcement ran an e-scooter and e-bike education campaign from June 1st to 21st and reported that confusion between the rules for private and shared scooters, along with excessive speed, were the most common concerns. Officers focused mainly on education, taking enforcement action in only a small number of cases.
  
  
• Starting October 1st, Airdrie residents will be able to recycle several new materials through their blue carts and at the Airdrie Recycle Depot as Alberta moves to the next phase of its Extended Producer Responsibility framework, which shifts the cost of recycling packaging and paper from municipalities and residents to the producers that make them. Newly accepted items include foam packaging such as clean meat trays and takeout containers, takeout coffee cups and lids, chip cans, and non-stretchy plastic bags. Circular Materials, the producer-funded organization that has run Airdrie's blue cart program since April, will also take over paper, plastic, and packaging recycling at the Recycle Depot on that date, while City staff continue to manage household hazardous waste, batteries, electronics, and other streams. Mayor Heather Spearman said the change is meant to make recycling easier for residents while shifting responsibility for packaging waste to producers. Council has previously approved a utility rate reduction that passes a share of the program's savings on to residents.
  
  
• Staff at the Airdrie Community Health Centre have dedicated a memorial bench to longtime volunteer Audrey Raw, who contributed more than 18,000 hours of service over 29 years before her death earlier this year. Raw began as a wayfinder and administrative assistant with Home Care and Public Health before moving to the Adult Day Program, and was recognized for her dedication at the program's Family Fun Day in 2025. Alberta Health Services Volunteers announced the bench, placed in the health centre's outdoor sitting area, in a Facebook post on August 5th.
