• The Community Infrastructure and Strategic Growth Standing Committee will meet tomorrow at 1:00 pm, and one of the items on the agenda is a proposal to rezone the former Peavey Mart site at 2649 Main Street SW so a fitness centre can open in the vacant building. The application, submitted on behalf of Morguard Real Estate Investment Trust, would move the 4.82-acre parcel in the Sierra Springs commercial area out of a site-specific district dating to 1998 and into the City's standard Regional Commercial District. The large-format retail building has sat vacant since 2025, and Administration says the change would also give future commercial and retail tenants more flexibility. The property also contains a Tim Hortons and a Jiffy Lube. Administration is recommending the Committee endorse the rezoning and forward it to Council for three readings, after which a public hearing would be held.
  
  
• Also on tomorrow's agenda is a proposal to close a short stretch of unused road next to 905 Edmonton Trail SE, where a four-storey building with ground-floor commercial space and three storeys of rental housing is under review. The road was originally built to serve the former RCMP detachment and has not served a transportation function since the detachment relocated in 2012, though it currently accommodates twelve public parking stalls. The developer asked the City to consider the closure to support the proposed project. Administration is recommending the Committee ask Council to approve both the closure and a rezoning of the closed road to public open space, which would keep underground water and sanitary lines and pathway connections protected. Before Council can close the road, the Municipal Government Act requires a public hearing, with notices running for three consecutive weeks and letters mailed to landowners within 60 meters.
  
  
• The Committee will also decide tomorrow on two development permit applications that would replace pairs of planned townhouse units with semi-detached homes, one at 1244 and 1246 Baysprings Place SW and the other at 1101 and 1105 Spring Valley Boulevard NE. Semi-detached dwellings are a discretionary use in both neighbourhoods, so the Committee, which serves as the City's planning commission, has the final say. Administration says both proposals maintain the planned density of their communities, comply with all development regulations without requiring variances, and fit the irregular corner lots better than larger townhouse buildings would. Administration is recommending approval of both permits. Neighbouring landowners within 60 meters will be notified of the decisions, which take effect without going to Council.
  
  
• The Community and Corporate Services Standing Committee's regular meeting, which had been scheduled for Tuesday at 9:00 am, has been cancelled. The Committee's next regular meeting is scheduled for September 22nd.
  
  
• Drivers in downtown Airdrie should expect intermittent lane closures as crews replace four curb ramps at Main Street and Tower Lane Mall/AHS. Work on the north side of the intersection is scheduled until August 28th, followed by work on the south side until September 4th. The upgrades are part of the City’s downtown revitalization plans, with drivers advised to expect minor delays. Several other road, sidewalk and pathway closures remain across Airdrie for construction and infrastructure projects. These include work on Yankee Valley Boulevard, Tanner Drive, 8 Street, Windsong Boulevard and 24 Street SW, with some closures extending into 2027. Pedestrians are also being detoured around several closed bridges while replacements and construction work continue.
