• The City of Airdrie will ask residents for input on the family activity zone at the planned SW Recreation Centre in the coming months, now that the project has moved into detailed design. Council endorsed the schematic design in July and approved building the entire facility at once instead of in three phases, and the City says all amenities are now targeted to open together in the first half of 2030. Two concepts are being explored for the indoor play and climbing area, one combining climbing, indoor play and a half court in a single space and one splitting them into three separate program areas. Council was told the options are expected to be cost neutral and that the engagement was already built into the design schedule. A separate round of input is planned on the aquatics area, covering possible slides, spray features and tipping buckets in the zero beach water play zone. Financial material presented in July showed every delivery option examined would push Airdrie past the provincial municipal debt limit during peak construction years and require provincial approval, with the concurrent approach projected to carry the lowest peak overage and the fastest recovery.
  
  
• Both ice surfaces at Genesis Place are set to reopen today, ending a closure that began in March after an ammonia leak in the refrigeration system serving the two arenas. Airdrie Recreation said Wednesday that crews had finished making ice and the rinks were ready to take users back, and the update did not change the reopening date. The surfaces went out of service on March 16th, when the leak was found in a controlled area of the system, and the City said at the time that the leak was isolated immediately and that there was no risk to patrons or staff. A later inspection found the condenser supporting the system had to be replaced, and a new one was installed by July 31st. An April update had projected a mid August reopening based on the time needed for shipping, installation and ice preparation. During the closure, dry pad programs were moved to Genesis Place while Plainsmen Arena was prepared for ice sports, and the rentals department worked with affected user groups on alternate ice.
  
  
• Airdrie's Chinook Winds Spray Park also reopened on August 11th after passing a new Alberta Health Services water test, ending a closure ordered when three consecutive samples showed elevated heterotrophic plate counts. Cory Anderson of the City of Airdrie Parks Department said the bacteria involved are naturally present in water and that the readings were driven mainly by heavy use over the Heritage Day long weekend. City staff ran a high concentration of chlorine through the system to flush it, rebalanced the water chemistry, and retested on August 10th, with the results meeting provincial standards. The City says the spray park is monitored through the day by on site staff who test and maintain chlorine levels, with samples sent to Alberta Health Services every Tuesday and results returned a few days later. Officials say dust from nearby construction, sunscreen washing off during busy periods and naturally occurring plant material can all push a sample above acceptable limits, and the City said this closure followed a sample showing higher than acceptable levels of organic plant material. Anderson is asking users to shower at one of the two showers on site before using the spray features, to cut the oils and dirt entering the system.
  
  
• Mayor Heather Spearman says she spent much of her first summer in office building relationships with provincial and federal politicians rather than on business at City Hall. Spearman described 12 to 14 hour days moving between Calgary Stampede events to get time with the Premier, what she called critical ministers, and regional colleagues, and said several federal ministers came to Airdrie for events and announcements over the same period. She argues the networking has laid the groundwork for the year from September through next summer, and that Council can now turn back to the boardroom table. Spearman also pointed back to Council's July decision to build the Southwest Recreation Centre all at once, framing the choice as staying with a three phase plan that would have finished in 2035 or moving to open the full facility by 2030. She said Council wants to correct misinformation about the project while giving previous councils grace for decisions made when COVID era supply chain problems and transit shutdowns constrained them. Spearman, first elected as a councillor in 2021, will also perform in the opening concert of the Windwood Music Festival, which runs from August 23rd to September 7th.
