Airdrie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Airdrie politics

📅 This Week In Airdrie: 📅

  • The Community Infrastructure and Strategic Growth Standing Committee meets tomorrow at 1:00 pm, and one of the items on the agenda is a recommendation that Council adopt a new Accessible and Inclusive Playgrounds Policy setting design standards for all new and replaced playgrounds. Under the proposed policy, every new or replacement playground would have to meet a Tier 1 standard, which includes accessible routes, rubber or engineered wood fibre surfacing, and accessible play equipment, at an estimated cost of $125,000 to $200,000 compared with $100,000 to $150,000 for a typical gravel playground today. Administration says the Tier 1 standard would eventually apply to about 84 of the City's 90 playgrounds as they are replaced over their life cycle. Larger regional parks would be built to a Tier 2 standard adding ramps, sensory and quiet areas, and accessible washrooms, at an estimated $750,000 to $1 million each. Administration acknowledges the policy would raise both construction and lifecycle costs, partly because accessible rubber surfacing lasts 10 to 15 years rather than 20 to 25 years for gravel, and says the added costs would need to be considered in future capital budgets. The Committee is being asked to recommend the policy to Council for adoption.

  • Also on tomorrow's agenda is a proposal to replace the City's Urban Forest Policy, first adopted in 2006, with an updated version governing how Airdrie manages trees on City land. The new policy adds a definitions section, sets out how ownership is decided when a tree straddles the line between public and private property, and adds tree protection rules requiring an approved protection plan for construction within six meters of a City tree. It also updates the processes for donating trees to the City and for removing City-owned trees, including a list of conditions under which a tree may be taken down and a statement that the City will not remove trees over nuisances such as leaf drop, shade, or blocked views. Administration says the update largely reflects current operating procedures and does not expect any change to its operating or capital budgets. The Committee is being asked to recommend that Council approve the new policy and repeal the 2006 version.

  • Airdrie has been named Alberta's Most Active Community in the 2026 ParticipACTION Community Challenge, earning the provincial title and $10,000 to support local physical activity and sport. Through June, the City offered free outdoor fitness classes such as yoga, Zumba, and pole walking in local parks, along with free access to recreation facilities and public skating. The national challenge ran from June 1st to June 30th and drew more than 385 participating communities. Québec City took the top national prize of $100,000 as Canada's Most Active Community, while ParticipACTION awarded between $5,000 and $10,000 to a winning community in each province and territory. Now in its seventh year, the initiative has awarded $1.7 million to communities since 2019.

  • Two former Airdrie hotels have been converted into housing for seniors and vulnerable residents with the help of federal funding announced on July 9th. Abrio Place, at 52 East Lake Avenue NE, received $8.3 million through the Affordable Housing Fund and now provides 93 seniors homes with services such as 24-hour emergency monitoring, and is owned and operated by the Rocky View Foundation. A second conversion, East Lake Apartments at 830 East Lake Boulevard NE, drew $2.5 million through the Rapid Housing Initiative and created 38 affordable homes for people including seniors, newcomers, and those at risk of homelessness, owned and operated by Airdrie Housing Limited. Both hotel conversions were completed in 2024, and residents have already moved in.

  • The Airdrie Regional Chamber of Commerce says local businesses showcased how they are using artificial intelligence during a roundtable discussion with federal Cabinet Minister Evan Solomon. The City of Airdrie hosted the meeting following a federal announcement in the community, with representatives from several of the region's largest businesses discussing the growing role of AI in the workplace and how governments can support its adoption. Chamber Executive Director Marilyne Aalhus said several companies shared examples of cutting-edge technology that could benefit other businesses and even government. She noted that many businesses are still working out how AI fits their operations, from developing workplace policies to training employees to use the technology effectively. The Chamber believes additional government-supported programs could help businesses adopt AI, pointing to the Digital Service Squad program introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which helped businesses improve their online presence, as a possible model. The Chamber says it is continuing conversations with the City and local AI experts, and hopes to build long-term partnerships that provide education and practical resources for the local business community.
