Airdrie Minute: Issue 118

Airdrie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Airdrie politics

📅 This Week In Airdrie: 📅

  • There are no Council or Committee meetings this week. The next meeting - a meeting of City Council - will take place on July 7th at 9:00 am. July 1st is Canada Day, a statutory holiday, and City offices and many services will have adjusted hours.

  • City Council has approved moving ahead with public art planning for two major capital projects after a lengthy debate over cost, timing and how the artwork should reflect the city's identity. Council confirmed a 1% construction-value allocation for permanent public art, amounting to a proposed $900,000 for the Southwest Recreation Centre and an advance allocation of about $500,000 in 2027 for Northeast Regional Park. Councillor Chris Glass questioned whether the recreation centre figure could eventually reach about $2.7 million if the 1% formula were applied across all three phases, asking how the City would rationalize that much spending on art. Deputy Mayor Candice Kolson asked why the item had returned to Council at all given a 1% public art policy adopted in March 2025, and staff said the policy still requires Council to confirm funding before the process begins.

  • The City of Airdrie says numerous construction projects will keep lane closures, pathway detours and parking lot restrictions in place across the city through the summer. Phased lane closures on Main Street Southeast between Elk Hill and Erin Drive are expected to last until August 4th for road rehabilitation, while traffic light work on Yankee Valley Boulevard at Kings Heights Gate could bring interruptions until July 30th. Two pedestrian bridge closures, including Nose Creek Park Bridge #7, remain in place with detours until October 1st as the bridges are replaced. Parking lots at the East Lake small dog park, the Kings Heights dog park and Ron Ebbesen Arena face temporary closures for paving and resurfacing, with most lasting into late July.

  • Rocky View Schools is adjusting French Immersion attendance boundaries for two Airdrie elementary schools beginning in the 2026/27 school year. Under the changes, the north portion of the Downtown Airdrie community will be removed from École Edwards Elementary School's French Immersion catchment and reassigned to A.E. Bowers Elementary School. In the other direction, The Village (South) and Edmonton Trail (South) areas will shift from A.E. Bowers' French Immersion boundary to École Edwards. The division says the adjustments are meant to align French Immersion attendance areas with the schools' English program boundaries, with the goal of keeping students from the same communities together and reducing confusion for families. Rocky View Schools emphasized that the changes will not affect students currently enrolled at either school. The new boundaries apply only to incoming students starting in the 2026/27 school year.

  • Local business owner and volunteer Chris Hovagimian will lead Airdrie's 2026 Canada Day Parade after the Airdrie Parades Committee named him this year's parade marshal. Hovagimian, a 10-year Airdrie resident who owns Airdrie Fountain Tire, was recognized for supporting local events such as Adopt-A-Grad and the Airdrie Irish football team, along with his volunteer work at the Airdrie Food Bank. The parade runs from 10:00 am to noon downtown on July 1st, with road closures beginning at 9:00 am. This year's route has been reversed because of Main Street construction, beginning at Allen Street and 1 Avenue and ending at École Edwards Elementary School. CultureFest will follow at Nose Creek Park, and a fireworks display is scheduled at Chinook Winds Regional Park from 10:45 pm to 11:05 pm. The City is encouraging visitors to walk, bike or take transit given limited parking, and says a free shuttle will be available for the parade and fireworks.
