There will be a Council meeting on Tuesday at 1:00 pm. Mayor Spearman has approved several upcoming civic recognitions and building illuminations at City Hall. On May 16th, 2026, the building will be lit in green to mark Celiac Awareness Day. The period of May 4th to May 8th, 2026 has been designated as Economic Development Week to highlight local economic activity and growth. In addition, June 1st to June 7th, 2026 will be recognized as Seniors’ Week, acknowledging the contributions of older residents in the community.

The 2026 Airdrie Business Survey was presented to Council as part of the City’s ongoing economic development efforts and included responses from 488 businesses. Overall results show a positive business outlook, with 85% of respondents satisfied with operating in Airdrie, 82% satisfied with City services, and 56% expecting revenue growth over the next year. While the results are generally positive, businesses identified key concerns including the cost and availability of commercial space, access to healthcare services, and planning and development processes. Economic Development will now use the findings to build an action plan, begin targeted outreach in Q3, and share results internally and with external partners to guide future decision-making.
- The City of Airdrie is seeking public feedback on a proposed update to its residential land use rules that could allow up to four housing units on a single residential lot in more areas of the city. The change would not alter existing zoning districts but would adjust regulations to permit additional housing types, building on current rules that already allow up to three units in some cases, such as suites and secondary dwellings. The proposal is part of the City’s Affordable Housing Principled Action Plan, which aims to expand housing options to better match population growth and workforce needs. Officials say community input will help shape the final approach, with residents able to respond through a survey open until May 25th, 2026.
- City Council has approved changes to its off-site levy bylaw that will lower costs for developers, particularly in relation to wastewater infrastructure. The adjustment follows the approval of provincial grant funding that will now help cover expenses previously expected to be funded through development charges. City Administration updated financial assumptions, project details, and supporting technical reports after confirming the funding. As a result, wastewater-related levy rates have been reduced, with additional minor decreases across other categories due to improved borrowing conditions and project refinements. The changes are part of a broader phased review of off-site levies that began in 2021.

The Community and Corporate Services Standing Committee is recommending that the City dedicate 1% of construction costs to public art in major new projects. The proposal would apply to upcoming facilities such as the Northeast Regional Park and the Southwest Recreation Centre, aligning with the City’s existing Public Art Policy. For the Northeast Regional Park, funding would support a large Indigenous-focused installation intended to reflect local heritage and advance reconciliation goals. The Southwest Recreation Centre is expected to include both indoor and outdoor sculptural works tied to themes of recreation and community life. City Administration would manage artist selection and community engagement as part of the process. Some councillors raised concerns about potential cost escalation and suggested the policy may need clearer limits.
