Airdrie City Council has decided to apply a $2.7-million year-end surplus toward reducing municipal debt, following discussion about using the funds for tax relief. The surplus arose from higher-than-expected investment income, savings in transit operations, mild weather, and the cancellation of the carbon tax, partially offset by lower building permit revenues. Administration recommended debt repayment as it would generate roughly $200,000 in annual savings and reduce the City’s overall debt limit, whereas using the surplus for a one-time tax reduction would not provide lasting benefits. During a March 17th meeting, Councillor Ron Chapman expressed a preference for applying the funds to offset taxes, citing rising property tax pressures, but no formal motion was made. Other Councillors emphasized the long-term advantages of debt reduction, noting it provides sustainable financial stability rather than temporary relief.
- Airdrie’s Fair Access program for low-income residents has seen its growth stabilize after rapid increases in the first years of the enhanced program. In 2025, the program supported 1,222 households and 3,121 residents, marking an 11% growth compared to 70% and 68% in prior years, with nearly half of approved applicants being renewals. Subsidized services showed mixed trends: Airdrie Transit saw a 19% rise in passes and medical trips, Genesis Place reported a 12% increase in memberships and a 93% jump in subsidized punch passes and drop-ins, while arts programming experienced some declines due to fewer ticketed events. Police Services recorded more subsidized criminal record checks and fingerprinting, reflecting the first full year of available subsidies. Overall, the City committed nearly $500,000 to the program.
- Airdrie’s annual Policing Town Hall highlighted a slight increase in crime alongside ongoing community engagement efforts. In 2025, total RCMP calls rose by 39%, with 5,229 files reported, including increases in vehicle theft (20%) and theft under $5,000 (19%), while most other crimes, including sexual assaults and break-ins, decreased. The city maintains a relatively low crime severity index of 43.2, compared to 95.6 for similar-sized municipalities. Reports of spousal abuse rose by 8%, likely reflecting greater willingness to report incidents, and mental health-related calls increased by 6.9%. Officers emphasized school and community outreach, making 51 appearances to foster positive relationships with youth. Public questions focused on speeding enforcement, particularly near Bert Church High School, and the panel stressed ongoing officer training, psychological assessment, and community support.

Council has advanced the design phase of the Southwest Recreation Centre while reviewing potential contributions from community user groups to fund specialized amenities. Staff presented a historical model where primary user groups provide 5% of capital costs based on projected amenity usage, which could amount to roughly $100 per participant annually. Council discussed equity, fairness, and the impact on families, with some members expressing concern over the financial burden on users already paying fees and seeking grants. Administration emphasized that contributions could be collected over 15 to 20 years and vary by amenity, such as the lane pool, arena, or field house. Deputy Mayor Candice Kolson and other Councillors recommended further engagement with user groups to refine the numbers and better understand which groups would benefit from the facility. Comparisons to other cities’ approaches, were also discussed as alternative funding models.
