The Community Safety and Social Services Standing Committee will meet this morning at 9:00 am. On the agenda is an update on Customer Experience Initiatives, focusing on the centralization of contact centre operations and new telephony systems. The Contact Centre Telephony Initiative, launched in November 2025, introduced real-time agent management, AI-driven call transcription, and omnichannel capabilities to improve service efficiency and quality. Centralization efforts have successfully onboarded multiple business units - including Utilities, Waste and Recycling, Parks, Roads, Taxation, Assessment, and Water Services - resulting in 42% of calls and 58% of emails being resolved at the first point of contact. Staff are preparing for the launch of a 311 non-emergency phone number on March 24th, 2026, with system testing and marketing campaigns underway to ensure a smooth rollout. Operational targets, including answering 80% of calls within 30 seconds and keeping abandonment rates below 5%, are being met, and monthly meetings with business units continue to optimize service.

The Community Infrastructure and Strategic Growth Standing Committee will meet today at 1:00 pm. The agenda includes an update on upcoming waste and recycling program changes effective in 2026. The City will transition to an automated black cart garbage collection program starting April 6, with carts delivered in early March and accompanied by educational materials for residents. During the transition, garbage will be collected using a hybrid manual and automated system, with BluPlanet providing black cart and green organics services, while GFL continues blue recycling cart collection.
- Council has approved a concept design for the new southwest recreation centre and directed staff to explore potential cost-saving measures as the project moves forward. The concept establishes the facility’s overall layout, major amenity spaces, and how components connect to the site, building on the 2025 site master plan. Council will review cost-saving options and the schematic design at an upcoming meeting, with schematic design refining floor plans, space interactions, building systems, and user flow. This stage will also involve a construction manager to support decisions on costing, value engineering, and schedule planning, alongside engagement with sport and community groups to optimize space use. After schematic design, the project will move to detailed design to finalize architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical components for construction. The southwest recreation centre is intended to meet urgent community needs and support a wide range of sports, wellness, and community activities while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
- Council has given first reading to a bylaw that would raise the ATCO natural gas franchise fee from 29.6% to the provincial maximum of 35%, with the increase potentially taking effect June 1st, 2026. The change, previously approved in the City’s 2026 budget, would generate an estimated $1 million in additional revenue over 12 months. Administration noted that without the fee increase, property taxes would have needed to rise to make up the shortfall. The bylaw must now go through public notification and approval by the Alberta Utilities Commission before second and third readings by Council. Residents will have an opportunity to provide feedback before final approval is considered.

Airdrie has been recognized as a 2025 Leader in Sustainability by Call2Recycle Canada for its efforts in battery recycling. The award highlights organizations that show strong environmental leadership and contribute to Canada’s circular economy through responsible battery collection. The City participates in the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program and collects an average of about 550 kilograms of batteries each month at its Recycle Depot. City officials say the program helps divert hazardous materials from landfills while improving safety for waste and recycling workers. Residents are encouraged to bring household batteries to the Recycle Depot year-round rather than placing them in curbside carts, as batteries can pose fire risks during collection and processing.
🚨 This Week’s Action Item: 🚨
Mayor Heather Spearman is optimistic after the provincial government committed $2 million over three years for planning and design of a regional health facility. The funding will support a feasibility study to determine the type of services, building requirements, and logistics for a potential North Calgary/Airdrie Regional Health Centre.
While the exact scope of the facility hasn’t been finalized, local advocates have recommended a more comprehensive setup similar to the Sturgeon Health Centre, including a full emergency department.
Spearman sees the funding as a positive sign that advocacy efforts are paying off and emphasizes the importance of getting the facility right for the long term.
What do you think - are you optimistic about the project going forward?
